Prologue — The World of Souls
In this world, all living things are driven by the soul.
It is the unseen force that breathes life into flesh, sharpens the mind, and binds fate to existence. Some believe the soul is a fragment of creation itself. Others believe it is a reflection of the stars above. Whatever its origin, one truth remains unchanged:
Every power in this world begins with the soul.
Yet the soul does not reveal itself in the same way for everyone.
For some, it becomes a companion.
For others, armor.
For others still, a curse.
Across the lands, scholars and warriors recognize four primary Expressions of the Soul.
Soul Companion — Guardian Beast
Among humans of Birthland and many other lands, the soul often awakens as a Guardian Beast.
A Guardian Beast is not summoned nor created. It is born alongside its host, a primordial entity bound to the very essence of a person’s being. Its form reflects the nature of the host — their instincts, emotions, and hidden potential.
Some appear as creatures of fang and claw.
Others take the form of wings, scales, or myth.
When awakened, the Guardian Beast grants its host extraordinary abilities, fighting beside them or through them as an extension of their soul.
Soul Manifestation — Soul Armor
Among the Celestians of the Heavensky Kingdom, the soul manifests differently.
Rather than a living companion, their spirit forms a divine construct known as Soul Armor.
Forged from purity, conviction, and celestial law, Soul Armor is a sacred manifestation of the bearer’s inner self. Each armor is unique, reflecting the wielder’s elemental bond and divine path.
Those who awaken Soul Armor are said to walk with the blessings of the heavens themselves.
Soul Corruption — Curse Mark
Not all souls remain pure.
Some become twisted by forbidden rituals, dark pacts, or the influence of corrupted realms. When this happens, the soul manifests as a Curse Mark.
These marks grant unnatural strength, dark magic, and terrifying abilities tied to shadow, blood, and death. But such power always demands a price.
The deeper one draws upon a Curse Mark, the closer they drift toward becoming something no longer human.
Soul Territory — Domain
Among Beastkin and Elves, the soul does not become companion or armor.
Instead, it claims the world itself.
This power is known as a Domain — a territory where the wielder’s soul bends reality to reflect their inner nature. Within a Domain, the environment itself becomes a weapon.
Forests may grow wild and endless.
Snow may fall beneath a summer sky.
Gravity, shadow, and time may twist under the will of the one who commands it.
To enter another’s Domain is to step into their world.
Though these powers differ, they share the same origin.
The soul.
And in this age of kingdoms, airships, steam engines, and ancient beasts, the power of the soul shapes the fate of nations.
The Great Kingdom of Birthland, a sprawling empire of iron cities and steam-powered machines, stands at the center of this new age. Its streets echo with the hiss of engines, the march of mechanical soldiers, and the ambition of those who seek power through Guardian Beasts.
But beneath the smoke of progress, darker forces move in secret.
A hidden organization has begun hunting those with powerful souls.
Tearing Guardian Beasts from their hosts.
Breaking the laws of nature itself.
And in the shadows of Birthland, a single mercenary will soon discover that some contracts are far more dangerous than war.
